Bugfoundation

A young start-up company from Germany that develops delicious, healthy and sustainable foods – made of insects.nEdible insects have many advantages for consumers and producers. Conventional livestock husbandry is responsible for 50% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. For the same amount of proteins produced, insects emit just a hundredth of greenhouse gas. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, breeding and production requires twelve times less food then would be needed for the same amount of beef. This reduces dramatically the need for water and land. Furthermore, insect based food has far more nutritive ingredients such as vitamins, mineral nutrients and polyunsaturated fat than meat. No hormones or antibiotics are used in the breeding. Especially compared to soy food - the actual trendy protein rich alternative to meat - insects need just a small fraction of space to be produced. Biological waste can be used as an input factor to realize a full cradle to cradle circle. This highly resource efficient way of food production also helps to combat the growing problem of the shortage of global food supply.nThe Bugfoundation developed its first product with edible insects, the “Bux Burger“. It is a burger patty based on 43% flour of buffalo worms (Alphitobius Diaperinus). With its attractive appearance and taste, it overcomes the distaste of consumers for edible insects.
